Registered Charity No. 502350

John Stuart - Musical Director

Christine Stuart - Chair

In November 2015, I took over as Chair of the committee and my role is to oversee the work of the committee and to chair its meetings.

In Harmony is a registered charity and the committee members, who are all trustees of the charity, are together responsible for managing the choir. This includes arranging concerts, recruiting new members and keeping an eye on the finances of the choir.

Rosemary Cook - Secretary

I am delighted to be taking on the role of Secretary to the choir. Though I haven't been a member long, I love the singing - rehearsals and concerts - so it's good to be able to help out by joining the committee and getting to know fellow choir members a bit better.

Christine Bilsby - Treasurer

 Librarian

One of the biggest resources the choir has is its extensive library of music. I joined the choir in 2022 and after a few months took over as librarian.  After our Musical Director has decided what musical pieces the choir will be singing, my role is to make sure that everyone has the right music and that all the copies are collected when finished with. This needs to be achieved without any valuable rehearsal time being taken up.

I have been singing in various choirs all my life and joined ‘In Harmony’ in 2013 when I moved to York.

I have been a committee member since 2016 and Treasurer since November 2018.

As Treasurer my job is to ensure all income and expenditure is accounted for and that it is reported to the Trustees regularly, and to the Charity Commission annually. In addition it is important for us to set and maintain an annual budget.

Music has always played a very important part in my life.  In the course of my career I have:

     - taught music in secondary schools

     - taught brass as a peripatetic teacher

     - been a church organist since the age of 15

     - played in and conducted brass bands

     - been the MD of an operatic society

     - been the deputy conductor of a choral society

     - conducted a male voice choir for 40 years

After moving to York in 2012, I was appointed as the organist of the two Parish Churches at Poppleton, I joined the York RI Golden Rail Brass Band as principal bass and also joined the York Musical Society.

It was when Margaret Garvey became ill I was asked at very short notice in February 2019 if I would conduct In Harmony at the York Community Choirs’ Festival.

Having recently given up conducting the York RI Development Band, giving me a free night, I was able to do this and also to continue taking the choir until my permanent appointment in February 2020.

It is an honour and privilege to work with an enthusiastic and capable group of ladies which has been so lovingly nurtured and trained by Margaret for quite a number of years.  I look forward to building on her work and continuing to perform concerts in and around York.
