Margaret Garvey -
Margaret joined the choir, then mixed, as the Musical Director in September 2012. When the choir became the ladies’ choir, “In Harmony”, in January 2013, Margaret continued as the M.D.
Margaret studied singing in London with Anthony Roden and Mary Beverley, then later learned about historically informed performance at York University. She has performed as a soloist for more than 30 years singing throughout Europe as well as touring the USA and South America through The British Council.
Margaret has been the Director of Music at York College For Girls, Queen Ethelburga’s College and taught music at The Minster School.
Her conducting career has been largely leading ladies’ and childrens’ choirs in the North of England. Her childrens’ choirs have performed at The Sage, Gateshead, as well as being successful in music festivals in the region.
Margaret says,”Singing is my passion. I am obsessed with clear enunciation, songs are always musical stories which come to life when the words are understood. I am delighted to be involved with ‘In Harmony’. Everyone seems as enthusiastic as I am and we enjoy ourselves whilst trying to expand our repertoire and develop our vocal skills.”
Christine Stuart -
In November 2015, I took over as Chair of the committee and my role is to oversee the work of the committee and to chair its meetings.
In Harmony is a registered charity and the committee members, who are all trustees of the charity, are together responsible for managing the choir. This includes arranging concerts, recruiting new members and keeping an eye on the finances of the choir.
Kath Starkey -
I became secretary of the committee soon after joining the choir when I learned there was a vacancy for the post and my main role is taking minutes at the committee meetings. Being a committee member is a great way to get involved with the running of the choir and to give something back in return for the sheer pleasure of singing “in harmony”!

One of the biggest resources the choir has is its extensive library of music. I joined the choir in 2013, took over as librarian in 2016 and will continue to make sure that everyone has all the right music and that all the copies are collected in when finished with. This is achieved without any valuable rehearsal time being taken up.
I have been singing in various choirs all my life and joined ‘In Harmony’ in 2013 when I moved to York.
I have been a committee member since 2016 and Treasurer since November 2018.
As Treasurer my job is to ensure all income and expenditure is accounted for and that it is reported to the Trustees regularly, and to the Charity Commission annually. In addition it is important for us to set and maintain an annual budget.
